'Cars 2' movie review: Needs a tuneup

'Cars 2' movie review: It should be obvious — although it shouldn’t have to be immutable — that studios and audiences look for different things in sequels.

Fans want familiar characters returning in different circumstances. They want favorite catchphrases revived, old jokes given a new twist and maybe a long-standing conflict resolved.

The moviemakers want more money.

Review: 'Cars 2' idles more than it should

After you've had fun spotting the Pixar movie references and chuckled at the ways writers have twisted car names, you realize "Cars 2" is nothing more than a big oil stain on the animation company's driveway.

Oh, sure, Larry the Cable Guy's Mater gets a few laughs and a nice life lesson, but this film is one sequel that didn't need to be made. Directors John Lasseter and Brad Lewis strain repeatedly to make us care about a car race that has ecological implications.
